Mashed Potatoes
This is a recipe for basic mashed potatoes.
Servings: 6 servings
Ingredients
- 6 medium potatoes (Russets work well) peeled and cubed 1" - 1 1/2"
- 1/4 cup salted butter or margarine melted
- 1/4 teaspoon pepper
- 1/4 cup milk heated
Instructions
- Place cubed potatoes in 3-quart saucepan; add water to cover. Heat to boiling over high heat. Reduce heat to low; cover and simmer until fork tender, approximately 30 minutes. Drain.
- Place in potatoes in large bowl of a mixer; add melted butter or margarine and pepper. Turn mixer on low and beat until potatoes have been mashed to an even consistency, without lumps. Over beating will cause them to turn to a gluey consistency. Alternatively, place potatoes in a large bowl and mash using a ricer. Using a ricer tends to be better at avoiding lumps.
- Once potatoes are mashed, slowly add just enough milk until mixture is moist and smooth (all of the milk may not be necessary).
Notes
Works well with Russet potatoes.
