SEASONS ABOUT

ARTIST'S STATEMENT - SEASONS

After settling back into my studio following a disruptive renovation, I decided to take my work in a new direction and began working on florals using acrylics and heavy papers, incorporating a bit of acrylic ink and colored pencil. For this series of the four seasons, it is evident that I had been looking at works by Asian artists, particularly the Chinese artists Yun Shouping (1633 – 1690) and Tao Rong (1872 – 1927). The placement of flowers reflects careful consideration for the interrelationship of shapes and lines within a perfectly balanced square. The solid warm golden backgrounds are a shimmering acrylic gold metal ink, painted with interwoven strokes over cool blue underpaintings of watercolor. Gold is so alluring and intrinsically enhances the beauty of the flowers.
